Chain Link Fence Installation in Tacoma

The most cost-effective way to secure a property line — and with black vinyl coating, it no longer looks like a compromise.

Why Chain Link Still Wins on Value

Chain link does one job better than any other fence material: it defines and secures a boundary for the lowest cost per foot, and it does it for decades with essentially no maintenance. In a climate that rots untreated wood and warps poorly made vinyl, a galvanized steel mesh fence just keeps standing.

The objection has always been looks. Black vinyl-coated chain link changed that. Against a treeline or a hedge, the coated mesh visually recedes — most people stop seeing the fence and start seeing the yard behind it. It has become our most-requested residential chain link finish in Tacoma and University Place.

We install chain link for backyards and dog runs, for storage yards and industrial perimeters, and for schools and municipal sites across Pierce and South King County.

Chain Link Systems We Install

Galvanized Chain Link

The classic silver finish. Zinc-coated steel mesh and posts, sized from residential-gauge up to heavy commercial. The lowest-cost option per foot and the standard choice for jobsites, storage yards, and utility enclosures.

Black Vinyl-Coated Chain Link

Galvanized core with a bonded black PVC coating. Costs modestly more than galvanized, resists corrosion better, and visually disappears against landscaping. The finish most Tacoma homeowners choose when the fence faces the yard.

Commercial & Industrial Grade

Heavier-gauge mesh, larger-diameter line and terminal posts, and top rail or tension-wire configurations rated for real security loads. Add barbed arms, privacy slats, or bottom tension wire depending on the site.

Privacy Slat Inserts

Vertical slats woven through the mesh to convert an open chain link run into a screened one. A practical middle path when you need privacy but the budget or site conditions do not support a solid privacy fence.

What Actually Determines the Quality of a Chain Link Install

Terminal post setting

Every corner, end, and gate post carries the tension of the entire run. Undersized terminal posts or shallow footings are the single most common reason a chain link fence starts leaning within a few years.

Correct mesh tension

Mesh that is pulled tight and properly banded to the terminal posts stays flat. Loose mesh ripples, sags at the bottom, and gives dogs a way underneath.

Top rail vs. tension wire

A top rail gives a cleaner line and more rigidity; top tension wire costs less and flexes rather than bending under impact. Which is right depends on whether the fence is decorative, containing animals, or taking abuse.

Grade following on slopes

Chain link can follow ground contour continuously rather than stepping like panel fence, which is a real advantage on the sloped lots common around Tacoma's North End and Gig Harbor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most chain link installs run $15–$30 per linear foot installed. Height, mesh gauge, and whether you choose galvanized or black vinyl-coated all affect the figure, and gates are priced separately. A free on-site estimate gives you a firm number for your actual property.

For a fence you look at every day, usually yes. The coating adds a modest amount per foot, adds a corrosion barrier over the galvanizing, and makes the mesh far less visually intrusive. For a back storage yard, plain galvanized is the sensible choice.

A properly installed galvanized chain link fence commonly lasts 20 years or more here with no maintenance beyond occasional gate hardware adjustment. Vinyl-coated systems can last longer because the coating shields the steel from constant moisture.

Yes, and it is one of the better options for it — dogs cannot chew through steel mesh and can see out, which reduces barrier frustration. For diggers we can add bottom tension wire or a buried bottom rail. Our pet-friendly fencing guide covers the trade-offs.

Usually not for a residential fence under six feet in the same location as an existing one. Permits typically come into play above six feet, on corner lots, around pools, or where the fence doubles as a retaining wall. See our Tacoma fence permit guide.

Yes. Privacy slats can be woven into existing mesh, which is far cheaper than replacing the fence. It will not match a solid cedar fence for screening, but it takes a see-through fence to mostly-screened for a fraction of the cost.
