Fence Installation in Gig Harbor, WA
Waterfront, wooded, and sloped — Gig Harbor lots ask more of a fence design than almost anywhere else we work.

Fencing a Difficult, Beautiful Peninsula
Gig Harbor is our most technically demanding market, and the reason is geography. Lots run down to the water, through stands of mature fir, across grades that would be considered unbuildable elsewhere. A fence design that works on a flat Tacoma lot often simply cannot be executed here.
The recurring tension is privacy versus view. Homeowners want a boundary and containment, but a solid six-foot fence across a water-view lot destroys the reason they bought the property. Ornamental aluminum solves this more often than any other material — a real barrier you can see straight through.
Saltwater exposure is the other constraint. Anything ferrous near the water needs to be specified for it, which is why aluminum rather than steel is usually our recommendation on the shoreline side.
What Shapes a Fence Project in Gig Harbor
Slope, and a lot of it
Peninsula lots frequently drop hard toward the water. Racking systems that follow grade continuously handle this far better than stepped panels, and layout on a steep site is genuinely a design exercise rather than a measurement.
Protecting the view
On a water-view lot the fence must not become the view. Ornamental aluminum, wire-backed rail, and partial-height solutions preserve sight lines while still containing a yard or a dog.
Saltwater corrosion
Salt air is hard on ferrous metal and on fasteners. Aluminum does not rust at all, which is why we specify it over steel on shoreline exposure even though steel is the stronger material.
HOA communities and tree cover
Canterwood and similar communities have design review. Heavily wooded lots also mean root systems dictating post placement and constant shade keeping wood damp year-round.

Permits in Gig Harbor
Permitting authority: City of Gig Harbor, or Pierce County for unincorporated areas
- Much of what people call "Gig Harbor" is unincorporated Pierce County, not the city. Which authority applies depends on your exact address.
- Shoreline properties may fall under additional shoreline management requirements beyond ordinary fence rules.
- Critical-area overlays for steep slopes and wetlands exist across the peninsula and can affect what is permitted.
- HOA design review in communities like Canterwood is separate from and additional to any public permitting.
Fence codes change. Treat the above as orientation, not legal advice — confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before you finalise a design. We help navigate the process on projects we build.
Gig Harbor Fencing FAQs
Can you install a fence on a steep Gig Harbor lot?
Yes — steep and sloped sites are a large share of our peninsula work. Rackable systems that follow the grade continuously usually look better than stepped panels on a significant slope. Steep terrain adds roughly $5–$15 per foot for the extra layout and labour.
What fence will not block my water view?
Ornamental aluminum is the usual answer. It is a genuine physical barrier that you can see straight through, so it contains a yard without taking the view. Wire-backed rail is a lower-cost alternative on larger parcels.
Does salt air damage fencing here?
It is hard on ferrous metal and fasteners. Aluminum does not rust at all, which is why we generally specify it over steel on shoreline exposure. Cedar and vinyl are both unaffected by salt.
Am I in the City of Gig Harbor or unincorporated Pierce County?
A Gig Harbor mailing address does not mean you are inside city limits — much of the peninsula is unincorporated Pierce County, with different rules. Shoreline and critical-area overlays may also apply. Confirm which authority governs your address before designing.
